Surfing on Ngor Island
Quality waves all year round, empty lineups, water temperatures between 18 and 26 °C depending on the time of year, Ngor has been calling surfers since 1966.
The legendary Ngor spot, empty lineups
West Africa may not be the first surf destination that comes to mind, yet it has an unmatched pedigree. On the Cape Verde peninsula, Dakar captures swells from both hemispheres, making it one of the most consistent surf destinations in the world, 365 days a year. While Moroccan spots attract hundreds of surfers, Ngor's lineups remain empty.
Go for the dawn patrol and you'll share the session with fewer than half a dozen riders in the warm Atlantic waters, just a few hours by plane from Europe. From the legendary Ngor Right, made famous by the film The Endless Summer in 1964, to the beach breaks on the south coast, the variety of waves around Dakar suits all levels.

The Best Surf Spots in Dakar
From the legendary Endless Summer reef break to beach breaks for beginners, the Cape Verde peninsula offers a constellation of world-class spots within a 30-minute radius. By venturing further south, less than two hours' drive from Dakar, surfers can also discover other quality waves along the Petite-Côte, with even wilder and less crowded spots, offering a great variety of conditions depending on the seasons.
Ngor Right
Immortalized by Bruce Brown in 1966, this legendary right has become a reference in surf history. It offers fast, powerful, and hollow waves breaking over a reef, providing perfect sections for surfers seeking speed. Its unique character and exceptional quality make it one of the most iconic spots in the world.
Ngor Left
A long left at the tip of the island that can roll for 200 meters, ideal for chaining maneuvers, a perfect terrain for longboarding. With its open sections and harmonious flow, it offers an ideal playground for chaining maneuvers while maintaining beautiful fluidity. Its length and rhythm also make it a top spot for longboarders, who can fully enjoy the wave and express their style over long trajectories.
Almadies Spots
Located at the tip of the Cape Verde peninsula, the Almadies area includes several iconic spots such as Ouakam, Secret, Vivier, and Club Med. This area is renowned for the diversity and quality of its waves, with a succession of reef breaks offering both lefts and rights. Depending on the swell, tide, and wind, the waves can be long and accessible or faster and more technical, thus catering to different skill levels. Thanks to its prime exposure to the Atlantic Ocean, the Almadies enjoy consistent conditions throughout the year, making this coast one of the top surf spots in Senegal and West Africa.
Virage and Yoff Beach Breaks
The beaches of Virage and Yoff host beach breaks known for their accessibility and versatility. With sandy bottoms, these spots generally offer softer and more forgiving waves than reef breaks, making them ideal places for learning and progression. Suitable for beginners as well as intermediate surfers, they offer varied conditions depending on the season, with waves perfect for working on technique, gaining confidence, and chaining first maneuvers. Their friendly atmosphere and regularity make them must-visit spots on the Dakar surf scene.
