SURFING ON NGOR ISLAND

The legendary Ngor spot, empty lineups

West Africa might not be the first surf destination that comes to mind, yet it boasts an unmatched pedigree. On the Cap-Vert peninsula, Dakar catches swells from both hemispheres, making it one of the most consistent surf destinations in the world, 365 days a year. While Moroccan spots attract hundreds of surfers, Ngor's lineups remain empty.

Head out at dawn patrol and you'll share the session with fewer than half a dozen riders, in the warm waters of the Atlantic, just a few hours by plane from Europe. From the legendary Ngor Right, made famous by the film The Endless Summer in 1966, to the beach breaks of the southern coast, the variety of waves around Dakar suits all levels.

The Breaks

Best Surf Spots in Dakar

From the legendary Endless Summer reef break to beginner-friendly beach breaks, the Cap-Vert peninsula offers a constellation of world-class spots within a 30-minute radius. Venturing further south, less than two hours from Dakar, surfers can also discover other quality waves along the Petite-Côte, with even wilder and less crowded spots, offering a great diversity of conditions depending on the season.

01

Ngor Right

Immortalized by Bruce Brown in 1966, this legendary right became a benchmark in surf history. It offers fast, powerful, and hollow waves breaking over a reef, providing perfect sections for surfers seeking speed. Its unique character and exceptional quality make it one of the most iconic spots in the world.

02

Ngor Left

A long left at the tip of the island that can roll for 200 meters, ideal for linking maneuvers, a perfect playground for longboarding. With its open sections and smooth flow, it offers an ideal terrain for chaining maneuvers while maintaining beautiful fluidity. Its length and rhythm also make it a prime spot for longboarders, who can fully enjoy the wave and express their style on long trajectories.

03

Almadies Spots

Located at the tip of the Cap-Vert peninsula, the Almadies area includes several iconic spots such as Ouakam, Secret, Vivier, and Club Med. This sector is renowned for the diversity and quality of its waves, with a succession of reef breaks offering both lefts and rights. Depending on the swell, tide, and wind, the waves can be long and accessible or faster and more technical, catering to different skill levels. Thanks to its prime exposure to the Atlantic Ocean, the Almadies enjoy regular conditions year-round, making this coast one of the top surf destinations in Senegal and West Africa.

04

Virage and Yoff Beach Breaks

The beaches of Virage and Yoff are home to beach breaks known for their accessibility and versatility. With their sandy bottoms, these spots offer waves that are generally softer and more forgiving than reef breaks, making them ideal for learning and progression. Suitable for beginners and intermediate surfers alike, they provide varied conditions depending on the season, with waves perfect for working on technique, gaining confidence, and linking first maneuvers. Their friendly setting and consistency make them must-visit spots on the Dakar surf scene.
